If you have ever seen a grilling competition on TV you know almost all of the competitors say that charcoal provides better flavor. Then you watch the chefs on the grilling shows and see that many of them are cooking over gas. Why is that? The reason of course is convenience.
I Chose the Convenience of a Gas Grill
Years ago I opted for that convenience. Coming home from work after a substantial commute meant that I just did not have the time to prepare a charcoal fire and let the grill heat up if we wanted to have dinner on the table before the kids went to bed for the night. Cleanup was also quite involved. Ignite and go with a good brushing at the end was better for me.
I Chose a Weber for Quality
After choosing gas I needed to find the best grill. My first few were cheapies, what did I know? They didn’t last and never worked correctly. Flare ups were quite common. Heat control was practically nonexistent and I burned a lot of meat. It was so bad I even considered indoor pan frying or broiling my steaks. Overcooked, dry chicken was a disaster as well. I decided that my next grill would be top quality, that meant Weber.

The turning point came when we decided to sell our house and move to a better neighborhood a few miles away. I told my wife that I would let her select the place to live if I got a new Weber grill. That was about 10 years ago and I have never regretted the deal. My dad was the first person to clue me in. He was a soldier when I was growing up and we moved a lot. He did just what I later did – each time we moved he threw out the old grill and then bought cheap gas or charcoal grill at the new place.
